The scanner tray has slots for each of these types of papers and can be removed to scan up to 50 letter-size documents at once. Could use a few features, but generally solid all-around. Simple and efficient software for organizing scanned documents. It's also really difficult, if not impossible, to feed thicker papers into the machine. You're better off using a flatbed scanner in those cases. Rock solid and good quality scans.
The scanning arena is totally new for me, so my apologies if this is crazy newb speak; but is this exactly what it sounds like? Easily convert books to eBooks which is handy enough , and then convert that to audio books?

With good translation? I was getting errors per page. In most cases it was easy to see what the word was supposed to be, so it was readable. A little distracting though. I didn't take it the extra step to audio books. To me it has tolerable english voices and stellar danish ones. I use the M in my law office.
I'm flooded with paper, and this thing scans great. Digitizing my docs has changed my practice. The Snow Leopard updates, although late, work fine.

I have the ScanSnap SM. I love it. I used it to go paperless a while back and it's made staying paperless a breeze. It scans most paper sizes perfectly and should easily accommodate everything you listed. As for pictures, I actually prefer the quality compared to my Canon flatbed scanner.
There are settings you can adjust and I have tried to ensure they are set to allow the highest possible quality. As for vs , it depends on the quantity of paper you plan on scanning on a regular basis. I'd guess most homes would be fine with the while businesses should probably step up to the if they receive a descent amount of paper to be scanned each week.
